The Chundikulam national park is situated in the northern province of Sri Lanka, just a 12 km north east of the Kilinochchi town, designated for bird sanctuary , Chundikulam national park Sri Lanka encompasses a 196 square kilometers and was declared a national park in 2015. The park was previously a wildlife sanctuary and due to its location, was under the control of the terrorists during a part of the civil war, until it was recaptured by the Sri Lankan army in 2009.
Following the recapture, a military base was built in the area, which restricted civilian access until 2012. Along with its opening to public, the army also opened the Chundikulam nature park holiday resort. Following the end of the civil war, the park was designated as a National park in 2015 under the government plan to convert various sanctuaries in the northern province into national parks along with Adam’s bridge, Delft and Madhu road national parks.
Chundikkulam is a lagoon partly surrounded by mangrove swamps and sea grass. Given its location within the dry zone of the country, the park ares also contains Palmyra and palm plantations, scrub foreste and other dry zone flora. Mammals such as the sloth bear, leopard and deer, reptiles such as mugger crocodile and saltwater crocodile as well as water and wader birds such as godwit, gull, stilt, flamingo, sandpiper, ibis etc. can be seen within the park.
