Kachchativu or Kachchatheevu is an island located about 15 miles North-East of Rameshwaran and approximately 14 miles South-West of Delft Islands within the territorial waters of Sri Lanka. There are no permanent inhabitants or any permanent structures on the Island other than a Roman Catholic Church which are currently administered by the bishop of Jaffna. As historical evidence show Kachchativu Island has been under the jurisdiction of Sri Lanka since the time of the Portuguese, Dutch and later the British rulers of Sri Lanka. (then Ceylon).
Government of Sri Lanka had always maintained a consistent policy based on historical facts on the issue of the ownership of Kachchativu. The issue of deciding Indian and Sri Lankan claims to Kachachativu was closely connected with determining the boundary line between India and Sri Lanka in the waters of Palk Bay. Government of India and Sri Lanka reached a settlement on the boundary by considering the historical evidence and the famous Non Align Movement (NAM) principle of Peaceful Coexistence. The issue has been concluded under the agreements signed by the government of India and Sri Lanka in 1974 and 1976.
Ramayana facts states that there are five sanjeevani drops in Sri Lanka. According to Hinduism Sanjeevani is a magical herb which has strong power to cure serious illnesses. It was believed that medicines prepared from this herb could revive situations where death is almost certain. Sanjeevani described in Ramayana, the great Indian epic as a as a magical herb or plant.
It is believed that, both Lord Rama and Lakshmana were injured severely by very powerful arrows and fell unconscious. So Lord Hanuman was instructed to fetch the lifesaving herbs from Himalaya in order to make them back to life. So Hanuman went to the hills, lifted the part of the hill and brought it to Sri Lanka as he was unable to identify the lifesaving herbs alone. While he was carrying the hill, it is believed that some Parts from the hill fell down at five places in Sri Lanka including Kachchatheevu Island Sri Lanka and other 4 Sanjeevani drops are namely, Rumassala in Galle, DoluKanda in Hiripitiya, Ritigala on the Habarana Anuradhapura road, Thalladi in Mannar.
