Maduru Oya National Park is located in the Eastern and Uva provinces of Sri Lanka, 288km north-east of Colombo, with Polonnaruwa as the closest city, Maduru Oya National Park is one among the four national parks established under the Mahaweli Development Project. Home to a wide range of wildlife inclusive of mammals, birds and reptiles, as well as flora unique to itself,
it also plays the role of a catchment of the Maduru Oya Reservoir. During your safari ride visit, not only can you witness the local elephants, but also smaller mammals such as sloth bears, leopards, jackals, and porcupines too.
Various aquatic birds can be seen in this park along with other birds endemic to Sri Lanka, such as the red-faced malkoha. For those on the lookout for reptiles, the list includes common and water monitors and the black-tailed python. Since the park is part of the dry zone, dry mixed evergreen forests are its characteristic plant community, together with shrubs, woody plants and teak.
In addition, the park also offers an insight on the cultural heritage of the area, with the discovery of an age-old sluice, deduced to have been constructed even before the 6th century BC.
