Sri Lanka first underwater museum has opened 17 th June 2020 in Galle Coastal area, the capital city of Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Galle is one of the top tourist destinations of Sri Lanka.
This underwater museum project has been completely carried out by Sri Lanka Naval Force under the guidance of Government of Sri Lanka. Underwater museum Sri Lanka was declared open by the Commander of Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva. This underwater museum is the latest addition of the museum collection of Sri Lanka.
Primary objectives of the Sri Lanka Underwater Museum are to develop the tourist attraction towards the country. Most international travel journals have been declared Sri Lanka as one of the best destinations in the world for travel. Being an island, Sri Lanka is having a great opportunity to develop maritime based tourism development.
Also other important objective of this underwater museum is to formation of artificial coral reef over the time while enhancing the marine life of the Galle area.

This is open for public now and open 365 days. But It is not recommended to visit from May to Sep which is off-season for southern coast with rough sea. Recommended to visit Galle underwater museum from Nov 1 st to 30 April each year.
All sculptures of the underwater museum in Galle were designed and sculpted by Navy sailors with the use of cement and ecofriendly material. Entire constructions work also were carried out by Sri Lanka Navy Team under direct supervision of Naval Commander of Sri Lanka. You can see different types of maritime / historical related sculptures at the underwater museum.
No fishing activities can be performed within the underwater museum in Galle Sri Lanka.
This was constructed by Sri Lanka Navy but now this is open for the General public and no direct naval administration is involved. But make sure that you must access this area with a registered boating company or diving school since this area is high security zone which is under Southern Naval Command of Sri Lanka Navy.
This museum is located under 15 Meters deep sea and you must be properly trained by a recognize diving school to visit the under-water museum and must be a PADI Open Water license holder.
PADI stand for “Professional Association of Diving Instructors”. PADI courses are performance based diving training courses and at the introductory level focus more practical knowledge, safety and motor skills. The basics of diving physics and physiology are introduced during entry level programs.
This museum is located 15 meters deep and you must be obtained “PADI Open Water License” to visit the underwater museum.
No, DSD or Discover Scuba Diving course covers maximum depth of 12 Meters and this museum need 15 – 20 Meters dive which PADI Open Water License is required.
