Horagalla National Park is located in Western Province / Gampaha District close to Nittambuwa city of Sri Lanka with an extent of 13 Hectares (33 acres). This is one of the low country wet zone evergreen National Parks of Sri Lanka offering a blend of nature with tranquility for a picturesque escape from the busy lives led enclosed in concrete structures. Horagolla National Park is the smallest National Park in Sri Lanka (33 acres)
Unlike the average national parks of Sri Lanka, this park is rich in flora over fauna. Different species of towering trees replace the skyscrapers we are accustomed to, and the occasional chirps from the different species of birds living on these trees form the source of entertainment. Not to forget, small mammals like fishing cats and grizzled giant squirrels, scurrying of deeper into the forest when noticed. The park spans across 33 acres and is home for 10 types of mammals, 64 types of birds, 7 types of fish and 28 types of butterflies. Initially this area was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in Oct 5th 1973 considering the rich bio diversity of the area in order to protect the area under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.
In 2004 July 28, Government of Sri Lanka converted Horagolla sanctuary to a National Park as Horagolla National Park under the same Ordinance. This park is highly recommended for bird lovers; commonly seen birds are parakeets, black-crested bulbuls, barbets, and Asian koels. Instead of jeep safaris into the wild, a visit to this park helps to be one with nature in a more laid-back manner. Sense the freshness of the air as you stroll down the trails defined inside the park and wash all that stress away.
