The Kany Esala Perahera (Pagent) 2021
The Sacred Tooth relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India around 305-331 A.D. Since then it became both a symbol of Buddhism in the country and one of divine ruling right to the kings that held it, which is how it came to be in Kandy.
To commemorate the relic and to pray for rains to bless the country during the droughts, the Sacred Tooth relic is paraded around the city during the month of Esala. (July-August)
The parade is believed to be one of the oldest, uninterrupted cultural events that has been practiced through the centuries to the present day.
Starting with the auspicious ceremony of Kap that took place on Monday the 9th August, the festivities and rituals which have been handed down for centuries are all falling into place in one of the greatest pageants on the paradise island.
This is one of the recommended activity for your tailor made holiday in Sri Lanka.
